Would you kindly complete the sentence "I feel the cold with Van because...." and email it to [email protected] so we can string all replies together on a youtube link. "WHAT IS NOT HAPPENING IN VAN? Two massive earthquakes and over 10,000 aftershocks struck the city of Van in eastern Turkey in October-November 2011, resulting in 644 casualties and over 10,000 displaced persons.[1] The thousands of families that sought shelter in temporary container homes are still struggling three years after the quakes. Their basic human needs have yet to be met; their electricity and water are cut, their children are deprived of school, and none of their proposed solutions are heard. Now, in the middle of Van’s fierce winter, they are even forced out of their containers! Their resort to hunger strikes affirms how helpless the Van victims really are. We see VAN! We hear their voices and we echo their demands: 1. Stop the forced evacuation of the container homes and provide the right to shelter for all! 2. Provide basic living necessities such as electricity and water! 3. Determine and meet the needs of every family having to live in containers! 4. Provide affordable housing and long term solutions for low-income and poor families! The conditions of life in the container homes do not fit in any good conscience. As forums in the USA, we stand together with the people of Van and demand that our citizens’ needs be heard and immediately met! WE ARE FREEZING IN THE USA with Van! https://www.facebook.com/events/212540682261260/?source=1 11-21-13, 6:30-10pm___Ekumenopolis Film screening & panel discussion UCLA Haines Hall - Room A18 Portola Plaza (near Royce Hall) Los Angeles, CA 90095 A film screening and panel discussion of Istanbul's neoliberal transformation. On the 1st forum the participants had decided that our priority should be to first articulate a group based on common denominators. In order to facilitate a discussion of group vision and infrastructure we would like to suggest the following focus questions for the 2nd forum: -WHY ARE WE HERE? -WHAT IS THE TARGET WE SHOULD FOCUS ON? -HOW DO WE WANT TO ACCOMPLISH OUR OBJECTIVES? -HOW CAN WE BEST ENGAGE OUR TALENTS, CONNECTIONS and RESOURCES to ACCOMPLISH OUR GOALS? We would like to tackle this group vision workshop that will be the b nexus of the 2nd Los Angeles Gezi forum in two sessions. Each participant will address the group in 2 minute speeches to address the questions above to formulate our vision and working groups. 7-3-13, 7-9pm___Dialog on Network Opportunities* 18th Street Arts Center 1653 18th St, Santa Monica, CA 90404 Washington, DC based Oltac Unsal is the guest presenter to discuss how Turkish expats can network for a positive change in Turkey. https://www.facebook.com/events/268019593339978/ 6-29-13, 1-3pm___First LA Gezi Forum 18th Street Arts Center 1653 18th St, Santa Monica, CA 90404 It’s about time we have our own version of Gezi Park style forum! Hope you can join us on June 29, Saturday, 1-2pm @ 18th Street Center in Santa Monica, CA for a local discussion assembly. The agenda of the forum where participants can take turns to speak their minds for 2minute slots is to explore our options for meaningful engagement from Los Angeles for a tangible impact on the situation in Turkey. Let’s discuss: -What should be our goal? -What would be the most effective strategy to achieve that goal? -What infrastructure do we need, how can we organize toward that? -What are the existing resources and infrastructures in Los Angeles and the United States who share our mission? How can we network with such others? The spirit of this forum is to strengthen solidarity within our local community so that we can consolidate our efforts for maximum impact. After all, Turkey ended up in the current situation due to chronic lack of strong political opposition. There are masses who vocally disagree with the current government but no political infrastructure to represent them because of a mindset that focuses on the differences versus the common denominator, so far the opposition parties have been narrowly focused on getting it their way versus getting there. Let’s break that cycle. Let’s initiate a platform to collectively assess the situation and develop strategies to act in unison for concrete results. Let’s initiate a forum and take it from there… https://www.facebook.com/events/468627129885934/ |
